Staring you in the Face
Four words that will unnerve any husband.
"It's in the drawer."
Your wife has given you the location of an object. You go to that location
...and you look.
...You can't see it.
You have to find this thing, so eventually, you cave and ask your wife to help you find what you’re looking for.
A colleague of mine jokingly called this "weaponized ignorance" after I asked her to help me find an item I was looking for in the office.
Where is my community? Where do I belong? Who are my people?
These are questions we try to answer when we’ve experienced a transition in our lives, when we feel like we’re far from home.
There have been times when I've tried to find the obvious when it's staring me in the face. Where can I find community? Just like whatever I'm searching for in a drawer or cabinet, community is usually staring me in the face. Our eyes are trained to see what we want to see, or sometimes we’re hoping for another group to come along, and in some cases, that means we miss out on the obvious.
The people you see on your street or cul-de-sac.
It could be the group of parents you get to know, dropping off your kids at school.
It's the regulars standing in line for coffee.
Your coworkers.
Your group chat
Appreciate them all while they are in your life. Talk to them. Have them over for dinner. You’ll miss them when they’re gone.
Thanks for reading, friend. Thank you for being a part of my community.
