We will Know Tomorrow

“A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals, and you know it. Fifteen hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat. And fifteen minutes ago, you knew that people were alone on this planet. Imagine what you’ll know tomorrow.” - Agent K

Men In Black (1997)

Easily one of my favourite movie quotes. In the movie "Men in Black", Agent K, played by Tommy Lee Jones, is sitting on a park bench, offering a young man, played by Will Smith, the opportunity of a lifetime to learn more about the universe. The year is 1997, and behind them, you see the Two Towers of the World Trade Center. The image itself brings up many thoughts decades later. We know that, in four years, the cityscape of New York will change significantly. We have all learned so much in all of our tomorrows since that summer in the movie theatres.

I can think of a lot of heartache in the chapters of the world since then, but I can’t help but celebrate the many good things that have happened as well. I'm reminded of the quote,

“Here is the world. Beautiful and terrible things will happen. Don't be afraid.”- Frederick Buechner.

Yes, we will face challenges, but they are part of life, and I won't be surprised when they come. I’ve already had conversations with friends and colleagues about the state of the world, and there is genuine fear about what lies ahead in the coming months. But I believe firmly that this year will bring opportunities for good, and I look forward to those moments with optimism.

Thank you for reading, friend. We will know good things tomorrow.
