Diamond Studded and Life Stunted
What's worth more to you? Water or Diamonds?
A bottle of water will run you about $1.29 at any convenience store. The cost of a diamond is between $2,500 to $18,000. How we perceive those values depends on our circumstances. These values are flipped in a desert.
Water keeps you alive, while diamonds promote and elevate your status. If Western civilization were a person faced with the decision to trade a diamond for a glass of water in the desert, the evidence suggests that it would choose to keep the diamonds of power, status, privilege, and dominance. We’ve all reached for them at one time or another.
A diamond has never kept you alive.
Your humanity is sustained by—family, friendship, knowledge, and faith. These are much more affordable to have and seek out. Metaphorically speaking, they are water for your humanity. There's a direct connection between your spiritual health and these ingredients that make you human. Seek the things in life that make you a healthy and thriving human! The diamonds of life have brought some joy, but they haven't added one day to your life.
What were you created for? The answer is simple and profound: to be a human. Our challenge is to stay human. I’m only interested in being part of life-giving efforts, teams, and causes that sustain our humanity.
Water helps; gems do not.
Are you pursuing a glass of water today, or are you seeking the gem?
Thanks for reading, friend. I want to live well, and I hope you do too. Get out and live life!
